Course Description:

As students and researchers, it's important to translate complex ideas and analysis into language our audience understands. Algorithms give you answers, but stories drive action. Turn sophisticated analysis into compelling stories using built-in storytelling capabilities of ArcGIS StoryMaps that incorporate maps, text, images, and videos. This workshop will prepare you to share your narratives with colleagues, clients, and the public. Learn how to plan, organize, and craft stories that provide greater context and understanding to your work. Use cases will include climate and environmental data, data for social good, and more.

This will be a hands-on session where attendees will be invited to follow along and build a StoryMap of their own.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the importance of distilling complex, sophisticated analysis for decision-makers and the public in order to maximize its value and contribution
  • To learn how to plan, organize and craft stories using a combination of narrative and media including maps, videos, images, and more
  • To learn how to use ArcGIS online to share spatial data and maps to enable storytelling and collaboration
  • To learn how ArcGIS StoryMaps can be used to distill complex analysis into compelling stories without writing a single line of code

Prerequisites: none

Target Audience:

  • Anyone who wants to provide meaningful context to their work
  • Anyone who wants to craft impactful and engaging stories that lead to understanding
