The Harvard Data Science Initiative (HDSI) is delighted to introduce Ying Jin, a 2024 HDSI Wojcicki Troper HDSI Postdoctoral Fellow. The HDSI Postdoctoral Fellows Program provides data science researchers with the opportunity to pursue their research goals in an intellectually diverse and vibrant community with ample mentorship. These independent researchers engage in collaborations with fellows and faculty across all schools at Harvard University.

Ying received a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.A. Ecomonics (Finance) from Tsinghua University, and her Ph.D. in Statistics from Stanford University. Ying’s academic journey is partly inspired by her Ph.D. advisor Emmanuel Candès, Barnum-Simons Chair in Mathematics and Statistics at Stanford University.
“His consistent emphasis on centering research around what important real problems data science can address has reshaped my perspective and approach to research,” said Ying.
Ying’s research interests include conformal prediction, causal inference, selective inference, and distribution robustness. Recently, she focused on the development of methods that provide new types of guaranteed uncertainty quantification for using black box prediction models in complex decisions, such as biomedical discovery.
Ying is also interested in generalizability and replicability of scientific findings across contexts, and she is currently working on empirical evidence and methodologies for these problems.
During her fellowship, Ying looks forward to pursuing new collaborations around these interests, as well as gaining more exposure to the application side of data science and creating her own research agenda.
“I am excited about the diverse community with a mixture of excellent scholars from many disciplines, as well as the freedom the program provides in exploring collaborations and mentorship,” said Ying. “In particular, the bio-related community provides exciting opportunities I wanted to explore.”
Starting this June, Ying will be hosted in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School by HDSI Faculty Affiliate José R. Zubizaretta, professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School.
Following the completion of her fellowship at the HDSI, Ying will join the Department of Statistics and Data Science at the University of Pennsylvania Warton School as an assistant professor.
Ying helps organize a regular international causal inference seminar, supported by the Stanford Department of Statistics and the Stanford Data Science Initiative. In her free time, Ying enjoys cooking, photography, and walking her dog.
