The Harvard Data Science Initiative (HDSI) is delighted to welcome Stratos Idreos as HDSI Faculty Co-Director. Stratos, a former HDSI Faculty Affiliate, was appointed to the HDSI leadership team this month to support the Initiative’s efforts in leveraging data science for social impact.
Stratos is Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). He was approved for the role of full professor with tenure at SEAS in 2023.
In 2023, Stratos was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship for his leadership in the field of computer science, and the Capers W. McDonald and Marion K. McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising for his exemplary mentorship and teaching.
Stratos is known for his pioneering research at the intersection of database systems, machine learning, and data science infrastructure. Stratos is a lauded computer scientist and active researcher who currently leads DASlab, the Data Systems Laboratory at Harvard University, which is developing a self-designing approach for managing large data sets with the aim to make data science more intuitive and interactive.
As HDSI Faculty Co-Director, Stratos will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation across Harvard University’s research landscape, and will strengthen the HDSI’s relationships with the University’s data science researchers, especially at SEAS. Stratos’s expertise and deep understanding of how to develop innovative systems will be invaluable to the HDSI’s progress and success.
Stratos’s vision and leadership will propel the Initiative as it enters a new phase of growth, while advancing the understanding and application of data science in academia and beyond. The entrepreneurial perspective Stratos brings to his work will accelerate the Initiative’s efforts to create impact throughout the University and beyond. Please join the HDSI in congratulating Stratos on his new role and in welcoming his continued contributions to the Harvard community and the field of data science. The HDSI looks forward to having his support as it works toward reaching new goals.
