Rick Mueller heads the NASS Spatial Analysis Research Section that contributes Earth observation and geospatial data products to support agency needs. He is responsible for managing production of domestic operational crop area, yield, condition, and disaster monitoring programs using Earth observation and geospatial analytics for public dissemination. His group developed the following online geospatial visualization portals called CropScape and CroplandCROS that depicts the national land cover dataset called the Cropland Data Layer, VegScape that shows crop vegetative condition, and CropCASMA showing soil moisture conditions. He co-chairs the US Group of Earth Observations (USGEO) Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) that develops solutions for unmet satellite needs for the federal community, contributes to the NASA triennial National Interests Panel measuring federal satellite uses and utility, and serves as liaison to the FCC’s Broadband Data and Mapping Working Group examining internet connectivity supporting precision agricultural activities. Rick received a B.S. degree in Geography from the University of Maryland and an M.S. in Business from Johns Hopkins University.
