Esther's research lies in the union of machine learning, statistics, and algorithms, with particular interest in problems with the potential for positive social impact. She is currently studying how data acquisition influences the efficacy and applicability of machine learning systems, with applications spanning combining remote sensing and machine learning and responsible use of machine learning in decision-making settings. More generally, Esther is interested in understanding key characteristics of different data sources, types, and structures that affect efficacy of data-driven algorithms, toward innovating and bridging insights in applied and theoretical statistical machine learning.

Esther will received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 2022, advised by Ben Recht and Michael I. Jordan. Before that, Esther graduated with a B.S.E. in Computer Science from Princeton University.
